Definition
A stable subpopulation (derne) that serves differentially as a source of colonists for establishing, joining, or replacing other such subpopulations of the same species; for example, a deme inhabiting an environmentally stable area whose members routinely establish transitory populations in environmentally unstable nearby areas.
