Definition

A quantitative-genetic parameter estimating the incremental contribution of each copy of a particular allele to the mean value of a particular organismal phenotype (such as height or weight) in the population being studied. Average effect is calculated from measurements of the population frequencies of all genotypes containing the allele, and the mean deviations of each genotypic class from the mean value of the phenotype in the population as a whole.
