Definition
A covalent bond between the sulfur atoms of two cysteine amino acids. Formation of such bonds between nonadjacent cysteines in a polypeptide stabilizes the tertiary structure of a protein; disulfide bonds between cysteines of different polypeptides contribute to the quaternary structure of a protein.
