Definition
A modification of the genetic concept of fitness to consider not only the average numbers of offspring produced by organisms of a particular genotype but also the consequences of those organisms for the reproductive outputs of their close relatives. Because close relatives have genes that are identical by descent, an organism that foregoes reproduction to enhance the reproductive success of numerous close relatives nonetheless contributes copies of its genes to future generations; such an organism could have high inclusive fitness despite a fitness of zero.
