Definition
One of a series of cytokines produced primarily by cells of the immune system, such as macrophages, mast cells, T and B cells, and also by endothelial cells and fibroblasts. Target cells are various leukocytes and other cells primarily involved with enhancing an immune response. The name "interleukins" derives from a mistaken early notion that they were produced only by leukocytes and that their target cells were limited to leukocytes.
