Definition
(Abbreviation of videocassette recorder) A device for recording and playing back video images and sound on a videocassette. Most VCRs use the VHS format and are compatible with one of the major television standards (NTSC in North America). VCRs have three different recording speeds, designated SP, LP, and EP. When recording an NTSC signal on a standard videocassette, SP produces a two-hour recording, LP a four-hour recording, and EP a six-hour recording. Four-head VCRs have a separate head for recording and playing back in both SP and EP modes.
