Definition
On the World Wide Web (WWW), an externally originated request for a specific file, such as a graphic or HTML page, by means of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Servers record the number of hits a Web site receives, but this is not identical to the number of unique individuals who have accessed the site; because many pages contain graphics, Java applets, sounds, and other resources, retrieving one page may require as many as a dozen or more hits.
