Definition

The rule that sends P to gamma_P defines a surjective homomorphism gamma: SU_2 -> SO_3, the spin homomorphism. Its kernel is the center {+-I} of SU_2. (SU_2 stands for the special unitary group of 2x2 matrices and SO_3 stands for the special orthogonal group of 3x3 matrices.)
