Definition

Let f be defined on a closed interval [a, b]. If f(c+) and f(c-), the right and left hand limits, respectively, both exist at some interior point c, then: a) f(c)-f(c-) is called the left hand jump of f at c, b) f(c+)-f(c) is called the right hand jump of f at c, c) f(c+)-f(c-) is called the jump of f at c. If any of these numbers is different from 0, then c is called a jump discontinuity of f.
