Definition: A code is an artificially constructed system, for representing a natural language; it has no structure of its own but instead borrows its structure from the natural language that is represents.
Source: Language Files, eleventh edition, edited by Vedrana Mihalicek and Christin Wilson
Example: Morse code is a well-known example of a code. Signed languages, on the other hand, evolve naturally and independently of spoken languages.
