Dependent Variable

  • Definition: In mathematics, a variable whose value is determined by the value of an independent variable. For example, in the formula for the area of a circle, A = (pi)r2, A is the dependent variable, as its value depends on the value of the radius (r).

That sign could be confusing. It suggests that the DV could be a "variety" of numbers. It is really a representation of a specific number. The word "variable" suggests "variety" English, but it has a different meaning in math.
