Independent Variable

  • Definition: In mathematics, a variable whose value determines the value of other variables. For example, in the formula for the area of a circle, A = (pi)r2, r is the independent variable, as its value determines the value of the area (A).

That sign could be confusing. It suggests that the I.V. could be a "variety" of numbers. It is really a representation of a specific number. The word "variable" suggests "variety" English, but it has a different meaning in math. I think a better sign for "variable" would be "show" or "represent" with the word "variable" fingerspelled first so the student understands the vocabulary used along with a conceptually correct sign.
