Definition: 1. the keyboard key that transmits ASCII code 13 (CR), normally the same as the Enter key. See CR. 2. to give a value as a result of a computation. For example, in many programming languages, sqrt(2) returns the square root of 2. Returning a value is not the same as printing it out; returning a value makes it available for further computation, as in sqrt(2)+3. 3. in C and related languages, the statement that causes the computer to exit a function or subroutine and return to the program that called it. For example, return x; means “exit, returning the value of x as the value of the function,” and return; means “exit, returning no value.”
