Biological oxygen demand (BOD)

  • Definition: The amount of oxygen required to oxidize the organic material in a water sample; high values in aquatic habitats often indicate pollution by sewage and other sources of organic wastes, or the over-production of plant material resulting from overenrichment by mineral nutrients.
