Definition: Control of the rate of transcription of a gene that encodes mRNA and rRna by untranscribed sequences physically adjacent to it on the same DNA molecule; cis-regulatory sequences influence the expression only of sequences physically linked to them and not of those present on a homologous chromosome in the same diploid nucleus.
