Definition
A large-amplitude oscillation of a system in response to a small driving force (forced oscillation). The resonant frequency is the frequency at which the ratio of the response to the driving force is maximized, and is close to the natural frequency. The frequency response around resonance is typically in the form of a Lorentzian function. Other phenomena with a similar dependence on frequency or energy (usually resulting from some sort of exponential decay) are also given the name 'resonance', including short-lived states of high-energy particles.
