Definition

Parametric equation is a method of defining a relation using parameters. A simple kinematic example is when one uses a time parameter to determine the position, velocity, and other information about a body in motion. A parametric equation defines a relation as a set of equations.

Example

An equation of a parabola is y = x^2, so it can be parametrized by using a parameter t, and then setting x equal to t (x=t) and y equal to t squared (y = t^2). An equation of a circle is x^2 + y^2 = 1 and it can be parametrized as ( cos(t), sin(t) for 0 <= t < 2*pi ).
