Definition

Every point P in the xy-plane corresponds to a unique pair of real numbers (x, y), where x is a number on the horizontal x-axis and y is a number on the vertical y-axis; for this reason, we commonly use the notation “P = (x,y).”

Example

A point that is 3 units to the right and 2 units above the origin of the origin on the xy-plane would be labeled (3,2).
