External Direct Sum

  • Definition: Let {G_a}_(a in J) be an indexed family of Abelian groups. Suppose that G is an abelian group, and that i_a: G_a -> G is a family of monomorphisms, such that G is the direct sum of the groups i_a(G_a). Then we say that G is the external direct sum of the groups G_a, relative to the monomorphisms i_a.
