Bolzano's Theorem

  • Definition: Let f be real-valued and continuous on a compact interval [a, b] in R, and suppose that f(a) and f(b) have opposite signs; that is, assume f(a)g(b) < 0. Then there is at least one point c in the open interval (a, b) such that f(c) = 0.
