Definition: 1.A device that converts electric signals to audible sound. Most speakers consist of a driver that vibrates a flexible cone or dome by means of an electromagnet. The size of the cone or dome determines the pitch of the sounds that the speaker can produce. Speakers designed to produce the lowest range of sounds, called subwoofers or woofers, have large cones, while those made for high-pitched sounds, called tweeters, have small cones or domes. Tweeters and woofers are often used in combination to reproduce a single audio channel. In such a setup, a device called a crossover divides the signal into the appropriate frequency ranges. 2.A set of such devices, sometimes assembled into a single structure, that work together to reproduce a single sound signal. Speaker units are often classified as two-way, three-way, and so on, depending on how many individual speakers they contain. Also called loudspeaker.
