Definition: Civil and environmental engineering is a profession which interfaces closely with society in the planning, design, construction, and management of facilities serving the needs of people. These activities include all transportation modes: highways, aerospace, rivers, and harbors; water resources, hydraulics, and coastal engineering; structures, mechanics, and geotechnical engineering; surveying, mapping, and photogrammetry; urban planning and development; water supply, wastewater treatment, and water-quality management; solid- and hazardous-waste disposal; and quality control and management of the air resources.
