Quadratic Formula

  • Definition: Consider the equation az^2 + bz + c = 0, where a, b, c are constants. The solutions for this equation are given by the formula: z = (-b +- (b^2 - 4ac)^(1/2)) / 2a

Source: "Precalculus" by David H. Collingwood, K. David Prince, and Matthew M. Conroy at University of Washington

  • Example: a=4, b=5, c=1 -1 = (-5 - (5^2 - 4(4)(1))^(1/2)) / 2(4) -1/4 = (-5 + (5^2 - 4(4)(1))^(1/2)) / 2(4)
