Definition: Acronym for Internet Message Access Protocol. In Internet e-mail, one of two fundamental protocols (the other is POP3) that governs how and where users store their incoming mail messages. For many users, this standard may prove more convenient than POP3 because all mail is kept in one central location, where it can be organized, archived, and made available from remote locations.
